Tips for Safe Winter Driving

December 4th, 2018 by

As your local Acura dealership, our relationship with you doesn’t simply end when you drive off our lot in your new Acura car. We continue to offer advice and services long after you’ve signed on the dotted line as a proud new car owner. Today, we’d like to give some tips regarding winter driving safety in particular so that you and your family have a safe and happy holiday season.

In New York, winter weather with freezing temperatures, ice, and snow can make driving quite treacherous. However, with some preparation and safe driving tactics, we hope you stay safe and warm all winter long. Additionally, it’s always smart to carry an emergency safety kit in your vehicle with items like a flashlight, road flares, water, a blanket, and other emergency tools just in case.

To prepare your vehicle for winter driving, you’ll first want to catch up on routine maintenance and services like oil changes and tire rotations to ensure your vehicle is running as it should. Secondly, make sure your tires and brakes are in good working condition. Our Acura service professionals can certainly assist you in checking them and make recommendations for replacements if needed.

When you’re driving, drive at the speed limit, or a bit under depending on conditions. Allow your vehicle time to warm up before you hit the road, and leave yourself extra time so you’re not in a rush when driving in the snow. Keep a safe distance between your vehicle and the one in front of you in case you need to stop quickly.

Lastly, make sure to keep at least half a tank of gas in your vehicle at all times, as it will help your car run better in the cold, and it can make a real difference to your safety in the event of a roadside emergency. We hope you have a safe and happy holiday season!
